CREATURES, CHARACTERS + CURIOUS PLACES
september 5 - october 20, 2023
RICHARD AND BARBARA Basch GALLERY

Each Spring, Freshman Illustration students take on the challenge of our 3-D design course. In this class, students design and ultimately create by hand, a three-dimensional world. Initially they develop two separate conceptual pitches, these are presented to the class and professor for critique, and final approval. The chosen concept is built around a general storyline, centering on a set of three characters: a protagonist-hero character, a sidekick character and the antagonist-villain character. Time is spent developing the backstory of the characters as well as explorations of various costume designs, dynamic poses and facial expressions. After the final design is ready, the characters are constructed, posed and sculpted displaying a moment of conflict or action in the storyline, and then an accompanying environment is also created using any variety of materials.
