FEATURING WORKS FROM THE RICHARD AND ELLEN SANDOR FAMILY COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS DONATED TO RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN

Art instructors have the incredible power to profoundly influence a student’s journey. Through their knowledge, expertise, and passion, they inspire and guide students to explore their creativity, discover their unique artistic voice, and develop their technical skills. Instructors foster nurturing and supportive environments, encourage students to take risks, embrace experimentation, and push the boundaries of their artistic abilities. Beyond technical aspects, an art teacher also acts as a mentor, sparking imagination, broadening perspectives, and nurturing a deep appreciation for art's power to communicate, express emotions, and provoke thought.

This exhibition not only explores the relationship but also the influence from instructors to their students.  This special photography exhibition features twelve early to mid-20th century vintage gelatin silver prints by Bill Brandt and Harry Callahan, donated to Ringling College of Art and Design from the world-class Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Collection. Also featured are late 20th and early 21st century works created with more modern techniques by photographers that carry these artists’ lineages: Emmet Gowin, a student of Harry Callahan; Tom Carabasi, a student of Gowin, and Jesse Clark, ‘23, a student of Carabasi.
