Under One Tree: Branching Our Paths

January 20 – February 20, 2026
Willis Smith Gallery

ABOUT:
Under One Tree: Branching Our Paths is an exhibition honoring the Asian and Asian American experience of hope as it is carried, reshaped, and renewed across generations. Anchored by the enduring symbolism of the Banyan tree—found throughout many regions of Asia—the exhibition reflects on interconnectedness, resilience, and becoming. Closely related to the fig tree, the Banyan is known for its expansive canopy, deep roots, and distinctive aerial roots that descend from its branches to take hold in the earth. Each root tells a story; each branch signals a new life and a new direction.

This exhibition invites student submissions that explore personal journeys of growth, memory, and identity through diverse forms of visual art and storytelling. Many Asian and Asian American artists come of age within multicultural and intergenerational homes, shaped by layered histories and shifting landscapes. Works may reflect these experiences in a wide range of media—such as environmental painting, sculpture, installation, or narrative forms—revealing how place, family, and cultural inheritance inform who we become.
