FIELD THEORY: Tory Mata
October 16–November 12, 2026

Organized by Ringling College of Art and Design Fine Art Student Gallery Directors
What connects us to one another, to the natural world, and to the spaces we inhabit? In Field Theory, interdisciplinary artist Tory Mata explores these questions through the intersection of theoretical physics, material experimentation, and human experience.
Drawing inspiration from the idea that seemingly separate elements may be part of a larger, interconnected system, Mata considers questions of belonging, meaning, and the tension between separation and wholeness. Her work challenges viewers to reconsider the boundaries they perceive between themselves and the world around them.
The exhibition brings together textural paintings made with clay, suspended cotton fabrics, earth-based prints, and handmade papers incorporating natural materials. Through these tactile processes, Mata transforms familiar substances into vehicles for contemplation. Grids become fields of possibility, surfaces record the passage of time, and material relationships suggest connections that may not be immediately visible.
At Ringling College of Art and Design, Field Theory offers an opportunity to consider how artistic practice can emerge through dialogue between disciplines. By drawing from scientific concepts while engaging with the sensory, emotional, and philosophical dimensions of making, Mata demonstrates how contemporary artists can translate complex ideas into meaningful visual experiences.
Curated by Ringling College’s Fine Art Student Gallery Directors, the exhibition also reflects the College’s commitment to student leadership, curatorial practice, and experiential learning. By selecting and presenting the work of a contemporary artist, student gallery directors engage directly with the process of shaping exhibitions that connect artists, ideas, and audiences. Field Theory invites students and visitors alike to experiment beyond conventional boundaries, question established ways of seeing, and discover how material, process, and concept can work together to communicate ideas.
Ultimately, Field Theory proposes that art can help us recognize the relationships that connect seemingly disparate parts into a larger whole.
Opening Reception: Friday, October 16, 5–8 PM
