Rob Tarbell: Illuminations

lluminations explores the fleeting nature of perception, identity, and belief through Rob Tarbell’s evocative use of smoke, mirrors, reflective surfaces, and reassembled objects. Drawing on the transient properties of smoke and the distortions created by mirroring and reflective color, Tarbell constructs works that expose false narratives, conflicted virtues, and fractured identities as they are broadcast, displayed, and manipulated.

Figures formed from smoke hover between presence and evasion, suspended against shifting reflective grounds that continually alter their appearance. Elsewhere, familiar ceramic tchotchkes are dismantled and reassembled into awkward, charged scenes, transforming cherished objects into unsettling narratives about purity, perception, and moral posturing.

Through these juxtapositions, Illuminations examines the tension between what we see and what we believe, revealing how easily meaning can be constructed, distorted, and performed.
