Distance and Arrival: Petticoat painters

june 3 – june 24, 2022

WILLIS SMITH CONSTRUCTION INC. GALLERY IN THE LARRY R. THOMPSON ACADEMIC CENTER

The Petticoat Painters is a group of twenty female painters who have shown work continuously for close to 70 years. The group started in the early 1950s after obtaining the opportunity to show their art in a local Sarasota gallery. The name, “Petticoat Painters”, was given to the original exhibit to be sure viewers knew it was an all- women painters group showing.  Well received, the show was the beginning   of their ongoing exhibitions. They retain the original name in honor of the founders of the group and for its historical signature. (Membership in the group is by invitation only.)

The group continues to evolve in their personal artmaking. The various techniques, styles and mediums    indicate the willingness to explore and experiment by the artists. With each painter bringing a different style to the exhibitions they display how many different ways there are to do art.

This exhibition will be on view from June 3 - June 24, 2022. In-person viewings are free and open to the public Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm. The Willis Smith gallery is located at 2363 Old Bradenton Road on the first floor of the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center.
